Getting There !!

January 8, 2006

It was late at night, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a cat. But, the bags were packed. If you look closely, you will see 6 big bags and 7 carry-ons. Good thing the kids are big! We woke up at 3:30am, and Greg gave us a ride to the airport (Thank you Greg) .
(if interested, click on images for bigger versions)

We had a layover in Houston where we just chilled out.

We got off the plane in Cancun. At this point, we had no idea what to do next. Valladolid is over 2 hours away. A cab from the airport is near $300. So, we got on a bus.

That went to downtown Cancun.

All the 1st class buses were gone, and it was a while till the next local route bus (which takes 4 hours, and it's 7pm). Susan negotiated with a cab to get us to Valladolid for $70. We crammed ALL our stuff into this little station wagon!

Mind you, we went on the “free” road that is a narrow two lane highway; that goes through many small pueblos; that have speed bumps that would kill your car if you hit them at more than 2mph; and, almost got rear ended; and almost hit a guy with a bike [clenched teeth the whole way]. We got in at 10pm. That was a long day.

The next day, we checked out our digs. And, we dug them… (our rooms and courtyard).

This our view out the front door.

It's an old church and convent (built in the 1500s) that is still being used. It is right across the street from where we are staying.

And, here is the crew walking down the street....

Stefan is taller that about 90% of the adults here!!!

More posts later.... (Feel free to comment though. We'll reply)
Cheers,

    Hi Aunt Susie,
I hear what you say about the taxis. But, we could have had a better ride if we told the guy to take the toll road (and we'd pay the toll).

We had two counts against us:

    1. Susan and I had neven been on the "libre" roads. So, we didn't know that it would go through the center of so many pueblos.

    2. Sunday night is traditionaly when there are more drunks on the road.

    But, all is good...
    Cheers,
    Tim
